Alberta’s PNP Draw Saw the Lowest CRS Score in 12 months

On the 5th of May 2021, the Canadian province of Alberta sent out Express Entry invitations for application of provincial nomination for those candidates scoring 300. This was deemed to be the lowest CRS score requirement since May 2020. The draw itself was not considered to be a major one, inviting only 250 immigration candidates. The invited candidates’ eligibility is tested through Alberta’s Express Entry stream, upon approval of which they receive an automatic bonus of 600 additional CRS points to their original score. This increases their likelihood of getting an invitation to apply for Canadian PR (permanent residency).

The Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) for Alberta-bound immigrants are hosted and organized by the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (AINP). The Alberta Express Entry stream is considered to be slightly advanced in nature as the process it follows is extracting candidates directly from the Express Entry pool. It goes without saying that the first step would be registering your profile within this pool.

Canadian Express Entry

Three of the Federal High Skilled programs are managed through this application management system called the Express Entry. The programs include the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Canadian Experience Class, and Federal Skilled Trades Program. Your eligibility for this Express Entry pathway is determined by your CRS score – which is basically something that grades you on a variety of factors like your age, language proficiency skills in English and/or French, educational background, working experience, and more.

The top-scoring candidates receive invites from Canada’s Immigration department labeled as the IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) which holds a series of Express Entry draws on a frequent basis. People possessing lower than standard CRS scores are advised to opt for a PNP, however, it is certainly possible to immigrate without one. The automatic addition of those bonus 600 points helps elevate their chances of being eligible. Suppose the lowest-scoring candidates belonging to the new Alberta draw get nominated, their points total to about 900, an easy-ticket to getting an Express Entry invite!

The Alberta Express Entry Stream

This is more suited for those having strong cordial connections to the province of Alberta. It’s a system that enables the provincial government to prioritize its diversification and support its economic progression. As far as the duration of the pandemic goes, Alberta has been reported to give high priority to those candidates already residing within and working in the province.

It’s mandatory that ideal candidates have a working position and relevant experience in an eligible occupation. The AINP hasn’t released a list of such eligible occupations but does provide a list of those that don’t fall within this category.

In the year 2020, Alberta was permitted to issue a total of 6,250 nomination certificates, however, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic this number was toned down to 4,000 only. The second half of the year witnessed no draws as all of these 4,000 certificates were issued by June 2020.

The figure for provincial nominations for Alberta in the year 2021 is yet to be released by the AINP.
