In a referendum today, the British people have voted to exit the European Union (EU). This can have some impact on the fortunes of those seeking to migrate from India. Now that Britain will leave EU it will not be possible for a person to have citizenship of any other country of EU and work and live freely in Britain. The exit of Britain from EU has raised global economic uncertainty. This has resulted in depreciation of all major currencies, including Indian Rupee, against the US dollar. When economic uncertainties go up dollar tends to strengthen against other currencies. With a weaker rupee against the US dollar it may become more expensive to travel abroad for Indians.

One positive consequence of Britain leaving European Union (EU) is that the value of pound has depreciated. The pound sharply dropped by 10% against the dollar today as the results of the referendum started coming. If this weak level of pound continues for sometime then it would be cheaper for Indians who are thinking of migrating to Britain for the purpose of study or permanent settlement.

In the past few years Britain has made its immigration norms more stringent. So the number of Indians migrating to Britain on temporary work or student visa has come down steadily.

London is considered to be the financial capital of the world. With Britain leaving UK, the status of London as global financial capital is in a jeopardy. The number of jobs in the financial sector of UK may go down because of this, in the near future. This may adversely affect the prospects of those who have qualifications in finance and who want to migrate to London to work in the financial sector there.
