John McCallum, Canada’s Minister of Immigration, recently stated that his intention is to “substantially increase” the total number of new immigrants to Canada. This is an attempt to fill the labour shortages in Canada. It is expected that three-year immigration will be unveiled this autumn. McCallum also added that the Canadian government will reduce some barriers in the country’s immigration system in order to make it more simplified.

In early 2016, the Canadian government unveiled its immigration plan for the year 2016. According to this plan Canada would welcome around 300,000 new permanent residents this year. Most of the new permanent residents in Canada immigrate through one of the many economic immigration programs that include Canada Express Entry System, Provincial Nominee Programs and Quebec Skilled Worker Program.

The number of invitation to apply and the total number of Comprehensive Ranking System points needed for a candidate to receive an Invitation To Apply remained relatively consistent, The lowest CRS cut of point in 2015 was 450. But it is interesting to note that a majority if people who received Invitations to Apply in 2015 had core CRS scores below 450. Core score is basically an indicator of a candidate’s point total without the additional 600 points for provincial nomination. In 2016, the number of Invitations to Apply per draw has decreased, and there has been a mild increase in the median CRS cut off score, There are proactive ways of reaching this score which include getting a Provincial Nomination Certificate, Bu t there is hope for the applicants as the Immigration Minister’s recent comments about solving labour shortages by increasing the number of immigrants may boost the morale of Express entry candidates, This will require to have the overall CRS cut off scores to be lowered, which will in turn give the candidates a better chance to receive an Invitation to apply.
