What is IELTS Test?

Overview:

IELTS was designed to measure the language ability of people who want to study or work where English is used as the language of communication. IELTS is recognized by over 9000 organizations worldwide, including universities, employers, professional bodies, immigration authorities and other government agencies.

There are two versions of IELTS:

1. IELTS Academic is for people applying to study in an English-speaking environment.
2. IELTS General Training is for those who want to migrate to an English-speaking country (Australia, Canada, New Zealand) or apply for training or work experience in an English-speaking environment.

IELTS & CLB:

The Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) are the national standards used by employers and educational institutions to describe, measure and recognize the English-language proficiency of adult immigrants and prospective immigrants for living and working in Canada.

IELTS results are reported on a nine-band scale, with each band corresponding to a specified competence in English. Test takers receive separate scores for each of the four test components: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The total score is the average of the four component scores.

IELTS score requirements vary depending on which program you are applying for.

IELTS score requirements for Express Entry programs

1.  The minimum IELTS score requirements for the Federal Skilled Worker Program are:
   1. CLB level 7, i.e., 6 in each section (Listening, Reading, Writing & Speaking.
2.  The minimum IELTS score requirements for the Federal Skilled Trades Program are:
   1. CLB level 5 i.e., 5 in Listening & Reading.
   2. CLB level 4 i.e., 3.5 in Reading & 4 in Writing.
3. The minimum IELTS score requirements for the Canadian Experience Class are:
   1. CLB level 7 i.e., 6 in each section (Listening, Reading, Writing & Speaking) for NOC 0 & A jobs.
   2. CLB level 5, i.e., 5 in Listening, Writing, Speaking & 4 in Reading for NOC B jobs.

IELTS Score Requirements for Express Entry Candidates with a Spouse or Common-Law Partner:

If you have a spouse or common-law partner who is also applying for Express Entry and they meet the minimum language requirements, you may be able to include their IELTS score in your Express Entry profile.

IELTS Score Requirements for PNPs:

Most Provincial and Territorial nominee programs (PNPs) have their own specific IELTS requirements, which are usually lower than the Express Entry requirement.

1. The minimum IELTS score requirements for the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP):
   1.  Requirement for Alberta Opportunity stream:
      1. CLB level 5, i.e., 5 in Listening, Writing, Speaking & 4 in Reading for NOC 0, A & B occupation.
   2. Requirement for Alberta Express Entry stream:
      1. CLB level 7, i.e., 6 in each section (Listening, Reading, Writing & Speaking)
2. The minimum IELTS score requirements for the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program (SINP)
   1.  International Skilled worker: Saskatchewan Express Entry:
      1. CLB level 7, i.e., 6 in each section (Listening, Reading, Writing & Speaking)
   2.  International Skilled worker: Occupation In-Demand:
      1. CLB level 4 i.e., Listening-4.5, Reading-3.5, Writing & speaking-4. Some employers may ask for language scores that are higher than CLB 4.
3. The minimum IELTS score requirements for the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP) are:
   1. CLB level 4 i.e., Listening-4.5, Reading-3.5, Writing & speaking-4.
4. The minimum IELTS score requirements for the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP)
   1.  Human Capital Priority Stream:
      1.  CLB level 7, i.e., 6 in each section (Listening, Reading, Writing & Speaking)
   2. Skilled Trade Stream:
      1. CLB level 5, i.e., 5 in Listening, Writing, Speaking & 4 in Reading.
   3. French-Speaking Skilled Worker Stream:
      1. CLB level 7, i.e., 6 in each section (Listening, Reading, Writing & Speaking)
5. The minimum IELTS score requirements for the Quebec Skilled Worker Program (QSWP) are:
   1. CLB level 5, i.e., 5 in Listening, Writing, Speaking & 4 in Reading.
6. The minimum IELTS score requirements for the Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program (AIPP) are:
   1. CLB level 4 i.e., Listening-4.5, Reading-3.5, Writing & speaking-4.
