Immigrants form 25% of the workforce in Canada, says reports

New statistics from Canada’s 2016 census shows that immigrants consist an approximate one-fourth of the current workforce in the country. Toronto and Ontario have half of the working class represented by immigrants.

Statistics released by Canadian authorities on Nov 29, 2017, shows that Immigrants form a significant fraction of workforce active in the country. Immigrants have played an important role in taking the Canadian economy ahead in last one decade.

Most of the immigrant workforce is highly skilled, with a bachelor or higher degree, says the data from Canada’s 2016 census.

The percentage of the immigrant workforce has gone up from 21.2 percent in 2006 to 23.8 percent in 2016. Express entry system introduced by Immigration Refugee Citizenship Canada (IRCC) in 2015 proves to be a major role player in this noticeable increment of skilled foreigners working in Canada.

The ratio is dearer in provinces like Toronto, Ontario and other metropolitan regions, where immigrants consist half of the workforce actively working toward growth and development. Vancouver and British Columbia have 43.2 percent of immigrants followed by Calgary and Alberta, which have 32.5 percent, immigrant workers, being the other popular destination among immigrants.

Statistics Canada defines an immigrant as a person who is, or who has ever been, a landed immigrant or permanent resident.

It is noticeable here that IRCC has set targets to intake one million immigrants in next three years. Most of these immigrants are to be taken from Canada’s Express Entry Program.
