Job hunting tips for immigrants in Australia

Australia is a land of opportunities for the talented minds that come from abroad to settle here. But getting a job down under is not that easy a job! Australia gives a lot of weight to local work experience, even more than the USA and countries in Europe. And this is the reason why skilled professionals have a tough time landing their dream job.

The experience that you may have working in the same job sector but abroad doesn’t hold much value in Australia. Employers are very particular about the communication skills of the job seeker. So work on your command over English and sound confident during your interview. Resumes can make or break your career. Poorly created resumes can have a negative impact on prospective employers. Australian employers are skeptical about a candidate’s communication skills because of a badly written resume. They don’t like taking too many risks. And this leads to a lot of potential candidates being rejected.

One major challenge that every immigrant job seeker must overcome is the need to put their overseas experience in perspective of their prospective Australian employer. Make sure you explain the hurdles that you faced in your previous jobs and how you dealt with them. It adds more character to your resume and Australian employers do respect hardworking employees. Make sure you maintain eye contact with the interviewer as it is a sign of confidence. Your cultural beliefs and practice shouldn’t  play a hindering factor in deciding the fate of your career.

Australian employers are still very old fashioned and believe that immigrants take time to learn the laws of business in Australia. In some jobs it takes longer than usual. The accounting industry is a tough but very highly paying industry. But the tax system and other complicated laws of the industry makes it difficult for immigrants to wrap their head around.

The employers do acknowledge that your overseas experience helps you compare the working styles of employees abroad and in Australia. And having a modern and refined way of thinking combined with high adaptability to more serious working conditions can surely get you noticed.
