Canada has temporarily changed its travel restrictions to let Canadians who visit South Africa can return home without having to take a COVID-19 test in a third country.

Canadian nationals and permanent residents who match all of the qualifying conditions listed on the government website will be eligible to undergo a pre-departure exam in South Africa.

Get a negative COVID-19 molecular test from a South African recognized laboratory no more than 48 hours before your intended departure, or a positive test result between 14 and 180 days before your departure.

Take a Lufthansa flight from Johannesburg or Cape Town to Frankfurt, Germany, on or before December 13, 2021.

Pass via Frankfurt Airport on your way to Canada on a direct Lufthansa or Air Canada aircraft.

After Canadians spoke out against the new travel limitations, the Canadian government amended the law on Saturday evening. Many people said that having to get tested in a third nation made it impossible for them to return home.

Following the discovery of the Omicron variety, Canada enacted the rules. Travelers from ten nations are now prohibited from entering Canada:

Botswana

Egypt;

Eswatini;

Lesotho;

Malawi;

Mozambique;

Namibia;

Nigeria;

South Africa; and

Zimbabwe.

are among the countries represented.

Omar Alghabra, the Transport Minister, posted four flow charts on Friday that provide visual assistance on the new travel measures.

If you are a Canadian returning from one of the ten forbidden countries, you must go into isolation once you arrive, regardless of your vaccination status. COVID-19 tests are also required upon arrival at the airport and on day 8 of your quarantine.

Travelers who have been vaccinated in countries other than the United States will be required to take an on-arrival test and be quarantined until they receive a negative result. If the test is positive, they must spend the next ten days in isolation.

Unvaccinated visitors from all countries other than the United States who are permitted to enter Canada will be required to quarantine for 14 days at home.
