Subclass 189 or the Australian Skilled- Independent visa is a Visa for the talented and skilled foreign workers who do not have a job offer from an Australian Employer. A Subclass 189 Skilled- Independent visa holder is allowed to live, work and settle permanently as an Australian Permanent Resident. Immediate family members can be included in the Visa Application, who is spouse and children of the visa applicant.

The eligibility criteria for this visa is that an applicant must score at least 65 points on the Australian point based system.

The Subclass 189 visa has a 3 stage application procedure:

• Stage I: The 1^st stage asks you to complete the skill assessment process with the relevant Government body. This skill assessment process enables the Australian Department of Immigration and Border Protection to know whether a candidate has the relevant professional skills to work in Australia.
• Stage II: After a candidate receives a positive and favorable assessment result, he will have to submit an Expression of Interest form through the Australian Skill Select.
• Stage III: After a candidate receives the Invitation to apply or an ITA, he can continue his application to the DIBP stage of the application process, where he will be able to submit his final application which will be approved by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection. After their approval, your visa will be granted.

There are some requirements that need to be filled in order to obtain the Australian skilled visa. A successful immigrant is granted a 5 year PR visa to live, settle and work in Australia. A candidate is required to live in Australia for 2 out of the 5 years to have his visa re-issued for the next 5 years. If a candidate is looking for Australian Citizenship, he is required to live in Australia for at least 4 years to become eligible for the Australian citizenship.
