Every year, more than one million new permanent residents, temporary foreign workers, and international students were arriving in Canada. There are many reasons to believe the willingness of people to relocate to Canada.

Of course, the pandemic has changed a lot of aspects. As a result, it is worth wondering whether these reforms would influence Canada’s appeal to immigrants after the end of pandemic.

In 2020, a survey between 28,000 prospective immigrants was conducted to understand the reasons for moving to Canada. The survey was held by World Education Services (WES),  an organisation formulated by  Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to assess the foreign credentials of those who submit a Canadian immigration application.

As per the survey, WES came up with three main findings:

  • During the pandemic in 2020, there was a surge of interest in immigrating to Canada.
  • The number of people who wanted to postpone their immigration to Canada had decreased.
  • Respondents believed their country’s economic conditions could be worse than Canada’s.

Ø The future looks bright for Canadian immigration:

Canada aims to accept newcomers from all over the world, but exemptions are already in place for groups including temporary foreign employees, international students, family members of Canadian citizens, and permanent residents, among others. Throughout the pandemic, federal and provincial governments have been inviting new immigration applicants, and they will be able to enter the country eventually.

Canada has doubled down on its commitment to immigration by aiming to welcome over 400,000 new permanent residents per year between 2021 and 2023.

In addition, the variety of educational, economic, and immigration opportunities available in Canada should continue to attract temporary foreign workers (TFWs) and international students.

Pandemic-related problems in Canada and abroad are frightening, but they are relatively short-term challenges that Canada should be able to overcome in order to help its newcomer attraction efforts.

Every year, IRCC spends around $2 billion on immigrant settlement programmes including language training and employment supports. This type of investment would send a clear message to newcomers: Even if you face continuing struggles in the pandemic, Canada is committed to helping you succeed.

Hence, the country’s strong and diverse diaspora communities will continue to attract future waves of newcomers.
