Melbourne is the capital city of the state of Victoria and is home to more than 4.5 million people. Melbourne has been repeatedly declared the most liveable city in the world by The Economist’s liveability rankings, which surveys over 140 cities around the world.

Melbourne has a vibrant Indian community with Indian-born migrants making up 3 per cent of Melbourne’s total population. Since 2001 the number of Indian-born migrants in Melbourne has more than tripled. 58,000 Indians have migrated to Melbourne since 2011.

Victoria runs the skilled nominated migration (190) program in order to attract highly skilled people to contribute to the skills needs of Victoria. Victoria has a selection-based invitation process for the 190 program. Under this process, the state selects and invites the most suitable candidates to apply for nomination.

Under the program:

  • The Victoria Government can nominate highly skilled workers with an occupation on the priority occupation list.
  • The 190 visa is a points-tested visa. Candidates who receive a nomination are awarded five additional points towards their overall points score.
  • Candidates nominated need to agree to live and work in Victoria for at least their first two years in Australia while holding this visa.

The visa criteria and visa application process is administered by the Australian Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP).

Candidates who are invited to apply for Victoria nomination need to demonstrate that they meet both Victoria’s and DIBP's visa eligibility requirements.
