The government of Canada announced, the sponsorship program for parents and grandparents will reopen in late January for EOI (Expression of Interest). IRCC is planning to accept around 20,000 applications through this program during 2019.

The program is known as PGP (Parents and Grandparents Program) which allows permanent residents and Canadian citizens (above the age of 18 years) to sponsor their parents and grandparents for Canadian permanent residence. IRCC (Immigration, Refugee, and citizenship Canada) will be processing up to 20,000 applications through PGPin 2019 and will be issuing Invitations to apply (ITA) to the first 20,000 eligible applicants/sponsors. Provided, the eligible sponsors submit Interest to sponsor form and fulfill all other program requirements.

This approach of accepting applications on first come first served was replaced with the randomized lottery process by IRCC last year but was then scrapped out due to a lot of criticism from clients and other stakeholders.

Many people criticized this random lottery approach as unfair for the people who have been waiting for years to sponsor their parents/grandparents. IRCC’s decision to revert to first-come, first-served approach was mainly due to the “listening to stakeholders and clients”. This modified process of first-come, first-served will give more flexibility to the government in processing applications and will ensure on receiving more applications.
