Canada invests $35 million to expand settlement services for newcomers

Newcomers to Canada play an important role in Canada’s future and contribute in numerous ways to its society and economic recovery from the pandemic.

An initiative announced by the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, will provide a helping hand to newcomers in smaller towns and rural areas throughout Canada. The government will invest more than $35 million to expand settlement services and capacity across Canada in order to make it easier for new residents to access essential services during their first year.

$21 million has been allocated to establish 9 new Resettlement Assistance Program service providers in British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, and New Brunswick. Settlement services assist immigrants by assisting them in finding work, and participating in their communities so they may maximize their potential as Canada rebuilds its economy.

Canada’s success as a global leader in settlement and integration is due to the efforts of these service provider organizations across the country. They work tirelessly to provide support services to newcomers in communities, which have proved to be vital during times of pandemic and as Canada welcomes more immigrants than ever before.

The Resettlement Assistance Program (RAP) includes income support and assistance for a variety of immediate required services provided by Service Provider Organizations (SPOs), usually within the first 4-6 weeks of a person’s arrival in Canada. Activities include the following:

*Meeting newcomers at the airport or final destination in Canada
*Providing temporary accommodation
*Providing basic orientation to Canada, life skills training and financial orientation
*Assisting in finding permanent accommodation
*Referring to other settlement programs
