The number of vacancies rose again in the first quarter of 2019 as compared to the same period in 2018. As per a report submitted by Statistics Canada, 80 percent of the vacancies were for permanent positions.
The first quarter of 2019 hit 506,000 job vacancies, an increase of around 44,000 comparing it with the same period in 2018. Employers across Canada are facing a labor shortage due to the aging population and retirement. The government’s decision to raise immigration levels is the only solution for this challenge. A majority of economic-class immigration is expected from the immigration programs.
The province of Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia saw an increase in job vacancies in the first quarter of 2019. Quebec saw the greatest year-on-year increase of 23% or 21,400 job vacancies, whereas Ontario with the second highest experienced increase of 12,400. British Columbia had a vacancy rate of 4.4 percent during the first quarter of 2019, which as per Statistics Canada is the highest.
