Become familiar with the Express Entry tie-breaking system to ensure your chance of success

The Express Entry tie-breaking system is complex and can be difficult to understand for those unfamiliar with the process. It is important to read up on the specifics of the tie-breaking system before submitting your profile.

In order to help rank and choose between Express Entry candidates with the same Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score, IRCC introduced a tie-breaking rule that is based on the date and time that “profiles were first submitted to the Express Entry pool.” By doing this, it creates a more efficient way of handling candidate’s submissions.

The most recent demonstration of this was the Express Entry draw that occurred on January 18, 2023. IRCC gave out a total of 5,550 ITAs with a minimum CRS score set at 490 and tie-breaking rule initiated on November 24, 2022 precisely at 21:14:59 UTC.

For this group of applicants, if their CRS score was 490 or higher and they had already submitted an Express Entry profile before the cutoff date, they were rewarded with an Invitation to Apply (ITA).
