IRCC is planning to increase the length of stay for Parents and Grandparents Super Visa from 2 years per entry to 5 years. The Super Visa is a great way for families to reunite in Canada, and this change will make it even more convenient and affordable.

What is super visa?

The super visa is a multiple-entry visa that allows parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents to stay in Canada for up to two years (now being increased) at a time. The super visa is valid for up to ten years, and there is no need to renew it as long as the holder remains eligible.

The super visa program was created in 2012 in response to the growing number of families who were unable to reunite due to the high cost and lengthy processing time for a regular visitor visa.

People who now have a Super Visa have the option of requesting to extend their stay in Canada by up to two years. This means current Super Visa holders may now live in Canada for up to seven years.

Canada issues around 17,000 Super Visas each year, according to IRCC. For over a decade, the Super Visa has been available as an alternative to the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP). Because demand for sponsorship exceeds the number of spaces available in the PGP, it is very popular.

To be eligible for the super visa, parents and grandparents must:

-be the parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident;

-have sponsorship from their child or grandchild in Canada;

-sponsor must meet certain income requirements

Those who pass a medical exam and can show evidence of private health insurance from an authorized insurer may apply for the Super Visa. This is great for Super Visa holders who can use emergency health care in Canada without having to pay for it themselves.
