There is shortage of skilled and experienced nurses in the Australian state of Queensland. There are a number of vacancies for qualified and experienced nurses in private and public hospitals in the state. One of the problems that Queensland is facing is that many overseas applicants for these nursing positions are not proficient in English.

So if you are a qualified nurse with some years of experience and proficiency in English language, then you have a good chance of getting a work visa to Australia. Demand for nurses with experience in renal care, cardiac care, aged care, mental health care and theatre care is high. Those with good communication skills have an advantage because communication has been identified as a critical skill- by Queensland hospitals- in providing nursing care to old patients.

Those who want to migrate to Australia, on a permanent basis, can also do so by doing a three year graduate nursing care course in a recognized Australian Nursing Institute and then working as a nurse there. A nurse needs to be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia in order to be eligible for practicing nursing in Queensland.

The government of state of Queensland has also announced that over the next four years, from 2015 to 2019, it will spend A $110 million in creating and supporting 4000 more jobs for nurses and midwifes in public hospitals in Queensland.

According to data from Department of Employment of Australian government, only 71% of nursing vacancies in Queensland were filled in the first six months of 2015. One-third of those advertising the vacancies said that they were unable to find any suitable applicant for these vacancies.

Nursing work in Queensland requires much technical understanding of the subject area. Nurses work under limited supervision and therefore should be competent enough to do things on their own. If you are a skilled and experienced nurse or midwife who is confident of his/her abilities and skills then you can get work visa to Australia. After living and working there as a nurse or midwife for a few years, you can get permanent residency permit in the country.
