The Immigration Levels Plan 2021-2023 aims to welcome 432,000 immigrants in 2022 to support Canada’s post-pandemic economic recovery. This is a significant jump from 2021 and previous years. You can use this opportunity to apply for the best visa option available to Indians – the Permanent Residency Visa or PR Visa.

Let’s look at all the options first.

What is a Canada Visa?

A Canada visa is an official document issued by the government of Canada that allows a person to enter, stay, or work in the country. There are different types of visas available, depending on your purpose for travelling to Canada.

The most common type of visa is the tourist visa, which allows you to stay in Canada for up to six months. If you want to stay longer, you can apply for a work visa or a study visa. There are also visas available for those who want to become permanent residents of Canada.

There are four main types of visas that Indians can apply for: Tourist visas, Permanent residency visas, Work visas, and Student visas. Let’s take a closer look at each one.

1. Canada Visitor Visa

The Canada visitor visa is a temporary visa that allows you to visit Canada for tourism or business purposes. This type of visa is valid for up to six months. To apply for a visitor visa, you will need to submit your passport, a completed application form, and supporting documents. These documents can include proof of financial support, a letter of invitation from someone in Canada, and proof of travel insurance.
You can apply for this visa through an online form or by filling out paper forms at a Canadian Embassy or Consulate.

Temporary visitor visas come in two forms: single and multiple entry.

A single entry visa permits you to enter the nation only once and will not allow you to return after leaving it. The multiple-entry visa allows you to visit and leave the nation as often as you want for the duration of its validity.

Here is a list of some of the most frequently granted Canadian Temporary Visitor Visas:

Canadian Tourist Visa

The purpose of a tourist visa is to allow visitors into the country for strictly tourism-related reasons. To get a visitor visa, you must:

  • Have a passport
  • Be in good health
  • Have no criminal or immigration-related convictions
  • Have ties with your home country — such as a job, home, financial assets or family — that will take you back to your home country
  • Convince an immigration officer that you will exit Canada at the end of your visit
  • Have enough money for your temporary stay in Canada

Canada Transit Visa

If you enter Canada via a connecting flight from another country, you must acquire a transit visa unless you possess a valid visitor visa. If your international flight stops at a Canadian airport on its way to another nation, you must acquire a transit visa to enter Canada according to Canadian immigration rules. You will stay in Canada for less than three months if you don’t have a connecting flight and will leave from the same airport.

You don’t need a transit visa if you’re:

  • A US citizen or permanent resident;
  • A citizen of a country that has a special agreement with Canada (known as the Agreement on Air Travel); or,
  • Transiting through a Canadian international airport for no more than 48 hours and you have a valid foreign passport and onward ticket.

Canada Super Visa

A visitor visa called super visa is available to parents or grandparents of Canadian permanent residents or citizens who want to see their children or grandchildren.

A super visa allows you to visit your children or grandchildren for up to two years at a time. It’s a multi-entry visa that allows multiple entries for 10 years or more. To apply for a super visa, you need the following:

  • A letter of invitation from your child or grandchild who is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada with the promise of financial support for the duration of your visit.
  • Evidence that your child or grandchild’s household income meets the required level.
  • Medical insurance of at least $100,000 from a Canadian insurance company valid for at least 1 year.

Canada Business Visa

Individuals or groups that wish to visit Canada for business reasons can qualify for this visa. To qualify for a business visitor visa to Canada, you must show that:

  • You plan to stay for less than 6 months
  • You don’t plan to take up a job in Canada
  • Your main place of business and source of income and profits is outside Canada
  • You meet Canada’s basic entry requirements: have a valid travel document such as a passport; have enough money for your stay and return; plan to exit Canada at the end of your visit; are not a criminal, security, or health risk to Canadians

2. Canada work permit

There are 2 types of work permits: open work permits and employer-specific work permits.

Openwork permits: allows you to work for any employer in Canada

Employer-specific work permits: allows you to work according to the conditions on your work permit, which include: the name of the employer you can work for; how long you can work; and the location where you can work (if applicable)

You need a valid job offer to get a work permit. This is generally quite difficult if you are not in Canada as employers typically look for candidates who already have a permanent resident visa.

International Experience Canada

International Experience Canada (IEC) is a program that allows young people from certain countries to work in Canada for up to two years.

There are 3 different kinds of work and travel experiences available:

Working Holiday: If you don’t have a job offer, this category is for you. Working Holiday visas are issued on an open work permit basis.

Young Professionals: This category is for you if you have a job offer in Canada that contributes to your professional development and your work is paid and not self-employed.

International Co-op (Internship): If you’re a student at a post-secondary institution and have a job offer for a work placement or internship in Canada, this is the category for you.

If you’re a citizen of one of the partner countries, you may be eligible to seek one or more of these three types of visas.

If you are not a citizen of a partner nation, you may be able to apply to IEC through a recognized organization.

Which Visa Should You Consider to Move to Canada From India?

The Express Entry immigration program is Canada’s most popular as it is the pathway to permanent residency.

The Express Entry system begins with the applicant submitting an online profile that is evaluated on Canada’s Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). To submit an Express Entry profile, you must first be eligible for one of Canada’s three federal streams. The Canadian government then sends out invitations to apply for permanent residence to the top-ranking candidates in the Express Entry pool.

For certain candidates eligible to submit a profile, the Express Entry procedure may be the quickest method to obtain permanent residency in Canada. In the federal invitation draw, it might be tough to meet the CRS cut-off but by being in the pool of applicants, a province may nominate you for permanent residence simply by being there.
